Alexandra Midal

Alexandra Midal combines a curating and research activity in design and visual culture. Professor in the Master Spaces & Communication, at HEAD – Genève, she teaches theoretical and practical workshops around the films by designers.

Former Director of the Regional Founds of Contemporary Art of Haute-Normandie (FRAC), and former assistant of Dan Graham, she has curated numerous shows in international museums: MAMC (Saint-Etienne); Musée d’art Moderne (Luxembourg), Musée d’art moderne (Paris), Cité du design (Saint-Etienne), Wolfsonian Museum (Miami), ADAM (Luxembourg); Lieu du design (Paris); Artist’s Space (New York). At the Design Project Room (2011-2014), Midal has curated solo shows: Carlo Mollino; Marguerite Humeau; Noam Toran; Auger-Loizeau; El Ultimo Grito; Superstudio etc. Her next show «  Top Secret  » on espionage, film, art and design will open in Fall 2022 at Cinémathèque Française, Paris, and then at La Caixa, Barcelone and Madrid.

She had her first solo show: Drive-in at CAPC, Museum of Contemporary Art, Bordeaux (2018-2019). Her next show will take place at LAM (Musée d’Art moderne) in fall 2020. Since 2016, Midal is curating the Invisible Film Festival, an education program of experimental films focused on exploring post-media design language and the narratives (New-York, 2015; Genève 2016; Istanbul 2018; London 2020)

She has published Design by Accident, For a New History of Design (Sternberg Press); La Manufacture du crime (Zone); Antidesign; Design, l’Anthologie; Eames & Hollywood; Politique-Fiction;  as well as essays in international journals and museum catalogues (MoMA, MOCA, MNAM, Mudam, ARC, MAMCO, Witte de With, etc.).
